Google lets users track internet blockers!

January 29, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Google Inc. has announced its plan to let its users track the internet blockers. This move from Google follows the debate over the net neutrality that rose following the implementation of Comcast ‘internet traffic management system’ whereby it would inappropriately block or slowdown certain internet actions.

Incidentally Google’s announcement comes a day after the statement from Cox Communications, third largest cable company in US, to imply methods to regulate the sharply rising internet traffic.

Both the internet service providers had to get their plea sanctioned by the Federal Communications Commission. However this gave birth to the debate over net neutrality. Therefore this action from Google has been hailed as a promising move from Google.

Under the so called traffic management system, internet service providers (ISPs) like Comcast and further, Cox Communications, would either block or slowdown the ‘non time-sensitive’ net activities like file downloads, software updates, peer-to-peer file sharing etc and would give precedence to streaming videos and online games or the ‘time sensitive’ activities.

This fuels the content and application companies, like Google, as they believe that the ISPs would get inappropriate power to discriminate as they have the unrestricted powers to favor some traffic over others.

Google’s chief internet guru, Vint Cerf, better known as the farther of internet has promised that “Google will provide academic researchers with 36 servers in 12 locations in the United States and Europe to analyze data”.

Cerf further wrote in a blog post, “When an Internet application doesn’t work as expected or your connection seems flaky, how can you tell whether there is a problem caused by your broadband ISP (Internet service provider), the application, your PC (personal computer), or something else?”

Cox to regulate internet traffic

January 28, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Do your web pages take longer to load? Are you also troubled with the mounting internet traffic? Here comes the good news!

One of the largest cable television companies of the US, Cox Communications is all set to test a newly developed technique in parts of Kansas and Arkansas that would help it deal efficiently with the mounting internet traffic. Cox Communications, a part of privately held Cox Enterprises Inc., based in Atlanta has planned to test its new initiative starting February 9, 2009, the success of which would also mean that this technology would further be applied to all its subscribers.

In an attempt to avoid its subscribers’ internet from jamming up, the company would prioritize the internet traffic that it assesses to be ‘time sensitive’. This essentially means if the internet traffic is at its peak precedence would be granted to those who would be indulged in a ‘time sensitive’ activity. The list of priorities is likely to include web pages, streaming videos and online games. Whereas the other activities like file download, software updates etc., which has been quoted as ‘non time sensitive’ data, would be held back for the time being.

On the other hand, some see this move as the intrusion of the internet service providers with the subscribers. Last year, the nation’s leading cable service provider Comcast Corp. became the first to get its method for traffic management sanctioned by the Federal Communications Commission. The procedure involved secretly stifling file sharing, hence raising questions of net neutrality.

However, according to the company’s official webpage, “This new technique is based on the time-sensitive nature of the Internet traffic itself, and we believe it will lead to a smoother Internet experience with fewer delays”.

Driven by the phenomenal success of the Apple’s product many companies including RIM, Nokia and Synaptics were in the line of launching a similar product of their own. However, winning the patent for its iPhone, Apple has legally succeeded in its attempt to halt its iPhone competitors from using the similar technology and there by restricting their efforts to come up with refined iPhones.

US Patent 7,479,949, which was issued on the 20th of Jaunuary, has been awarded to “(Steve) Jobs et al” for a method of “detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display” to command computing devices. The good news was followed by the company’s official announcement of their all-time high quarterly profits, a day later.

“We think competition is good. We are ready to suit up and go against anyone. However, we will not stand for having our IP ripped off and will use whatever weapons at our disposal”, said the elated chief operating officer Tim Cook, hailing the iPhone as ‘Apple’s intelectual property’.

When John Donovan, chief technology officer at Dallas-based AT&T Inc., said “Consumer technology changes so fast that any company that tries to pause is likely to be overrun by its competitors”, it was strongly felt that the pace of the technological developments is least likely to slowdown fearing recession.

However, tech giants like Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co., Yahoo! Inc., Adobe Systems Inc., Sun Microsystems Inc. and Palm Inc. are amongst the many firms who have decided to trim their staff by many thousands. This move from the tech world comes as an effort to cope up with the financial meltdown which has forced the industry to hack their advertising and investment expenses.

Believing the Goldman Sachs Group Inc., the global expenditure on computers and softwares is expected to slip by another 8 percent in the financial year 2009-10 in the U.S., Western Europe and Japan.

Andy Miedler, a senior technology analyst at Edward Jones, feels, “Layoffs and cost-cutting are unfortunate, but companies have to make tough decisions in a rough economy to preserve their own financial position.

With Apple’s iPod, iPhone and Macintosh Computers’ sales hitting an all time high, the company’s gross income rose to $1.61 billion in the first quarter of the financial year 2009, as compared to the previous year’s $1.58 billion, a rise of 1.89%. However the three products that contributed to the unparalleled success individually saw a growth of 3%, 88% and 9% respectively in their sales.

While the world speculated on the slowdown in the US economy and its subsequent effects on the global market, many of the analysts on the subject, foreseeing a reduced demand, announced a tough time ahead for the Information Technology (IT) sector. Gone are the days of the never ending treatments and painful surgeries, Welcome Cyberknife systems!

Cyberknife, invented by John R. Adler, a Stanford University Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology, is a frameless robotic radiosurgery system. CyberKnife System is the world’s earliest and lone robotic radio surgical system.

Cyberknife in other words could be described as the most advanced no surgical, painless technology that can reduce or eliminate certain scratch and tumors located in prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney.

The benefits are countless. This technology is highly precise and considerably shortens treatment time. What adds to its value is the fact that this minimizes healthy tissue’s exposure to radiation. The irony is that using this system means no cuts and no complex surgeries!

The system uses computer-assisted, non-surgical technology to transmit small beams of radiation from several different angles into a tumor.

Over thousands of Cyberknife systems have been installed worldwide and have till now successfully treated 50,000 patients.

Get Greener! Part (II)

January 16, 2009 · Filed Under Reviews · Comment

It’s a constructive way to kill boredom. This can get extremely relaxing for people who have a passion for greenery. A passionate person like me would daily return to application like these to and repay a little rather than making friends with unseen faces!

A selective exposure to Facebook for applications like this can be a fun filled way to teach the little ones the importance of greenery, teach them the basics of gardening, importance of sunlight, watering and pesticides.

However, the humble motive behind the applications like (Lil) Green Patch is to save the depleting rain forests. Using the sponsorship revenue from advertisers the developers are making donations to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre program. The more you grow, the more you gift, the more you get back. And each ‘flowery’ gift that a user of these applications sends or receives, contributes a lot in saving the planet. And for those who think it’s a mere wastage of time and resources to live an illusionary life, living your passions through a social networking site, this should serve as enough of an inspiration to join hands with the world in saving our mother earth. Come unite for the cause!
