Apple iPhone May be Hacked by Via SMS

July 31, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Security experts have discovered a security flaw in the iPhone that allows hackers to breach the iPhone through text messages.

researchers Collin Mulliner and Charlie Miller pointed out the vulnerability at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas on Thursday. They explained that the iPhone can be externally controlled by a burst of repeated text messages which are mostly invisible. This process would allow a hacker to gain control of the entire range of iPhone functions including phone, Web browsing, text messaging, microphone as well as camera thus effectively hacking into all personal information of the iPhone user. There is apparently a similar flaw in the Windows Mobile phone too.

According to Mulliner and Miller the attack exploited a security flaw in the iPhone that would keep the code in the text message from embedding an executive file in the memory of the mobile device. If hacked into, the iPhone of the users would get a text message with merely a square in the message.

Miller and Mulliner also claimed at the conference that they had discovered the security flaw in the iPhone almost a month back and had brought it into the notice of Apple which had however reportedly declined to comment on the matter.

Travel Through the Loneliest Road in America

One of the most exciting ways to discover the vast landscape of the Wild West is to travel by road. However if that road happens to be the Highway 50 through Nevada in United States, the experience becomes all the more memorable since it is known as the loneliest road in the country.

The 287 miles of Highway 50 pose an interesting challenge to any motorist for it means driving through deserted villages and dreary gas stations. In the beginning of twentieth century however this used to be a very busy since it was one of the earliest roads to run from coast to coast. But a series of misfortunes like fires and mining slumps turned many of the places along the Highway 50 into ghost towns.

Driving through the Highway 50 can be a surreal experience as abandoned buildings, old churches and near-empty bars pass along. The Nevada Commission on Tourism in fact rewards its travelers with a certificate which declares, “I survived Highway 50”. However to attain this, travelers have to stop in the towns of Fern, Ely, Eureka, Fallon and Austin to get their Official Highway 50 Survival Guide validated and stamped by locals.

Along The Highway 50 travelers can stop by Ely to take in the sights and sounds of this place. For best Ely hotel deals in one can check out www.ooaha.com.

Now Internet Offers A Way to Feel Better

Therapy and counseling over the Internet can be as effective in treating depression as conventional face to face therapy sessions says a new study conducted in Australia.

According to findings by researchers of New South Wales University in Sydney, depression can be combated as effectively by therapy sessions over the internet as traditional sessions where the counselor and patient are in direct one-to-one contact. the results appear to run counter to conventional wisdom that therapy sessions work best when the counselor and counselee build up an understanding from face to face meetings.

Researchers of this study believe that the positive effect of internet therapy sessions arose from one basic feature of the medium and that is the anonymity it provides. It may be because patients can free their inhibitions to their counselor over the Internet to a greater extent than they may have been able to do in direct encounters.

Counselors point out how one of the biggest obstacles to effective therapy is the façade that patients often put up in an attempt to show that everything is okay and there are no problems. An impersonal medium like the internet perhaps encourages patients to get over their inhibitions and reveal the problems as they really are.

Text Messaging at Wheel Poses Grave Risk to Drivers, Finds Study

July 28, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Text messaging while driving raises the motorist’s risk of a crash by twenty-three times, a new study by American researchers has found out.

The study conducted by Virginia Tech’s Transportation Institute found out that truck drivers who text messaged while driving took their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds over an interval of 6 seconds. This was the longest period of distraction faced by motorists to have been caused by a mobile device. Researchers explained that this was the same as running with eyes closed the length of a football field at 55 miles per hour.

Results of the study also revealed that talking or listening to mobile phones while driving posed lesser risk of accidents for drivers as compared to text messaging since the former scenario allowed motorists to keep their eyes on the road. Still the risk of an accident for motorists while speaking or listening on a mobile phone was 1.3 times higher than in case of drivers who were not similarly distracted.

The study was conducted to reveal the impact of mobile phones in actual driving situations rather than in simulated environments. Results of the analysis were compiled from data acquired through cameras and tracking equipments placed in the vehicles of the participants.

Amazon Says Sorry for Deleting E-books on Kindles

July 27, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos issued an apology on Thursday after the company deleted copies of e-books on customers’ Kindles last week.

In the apology posted on company site, Bezos admitted that the move by Amazon was “stupid, thoughtless and painfully out of line with our principles.” Amazon had removed copies of e-books from its customers’ Kindles in an attempt to control illegally sold works on Kindles. However the step resulted in a huge outcry of protest from customers and a barrage of criticism on the way Amazon had handled the issue.

Among the novels deleted from customers’ Kindles reader were Animal Farm and 1984 both works of mid-twentieth century British novelist George Orwell. The fact of Amazon arbitrarily deleting e-books which were themselves based on the evils of repressive societies added a further irony to the whole issue. Some customers also complained that Amazon had deleted copies of other novels as well from their Kindles like those by Ayn Rand and some of the Harry Potter series.

Close on the heels of its public relations mess, Amazon also released its second quarterly earnings which fell far below Wall Street expectations and consequently suffered a 7% drop in share value on the stock market.

New Zealand’s Volcanic Landscape

July 27, 2009 · Filed Under Advertising · Comment

Travel portals describe New Zealand as the youngest country on earth since it was the last landmass to be discovered and people started arriving on it only a thousand years ago. Yet this country boasts of spectacular landscapes and is a favored destination for nature lovers.

One striking aspect of the diverse New Zealand landscape is its volcanic feature. Lying on the southern tip of the Pacific Rim of Fire, New Zealand has been shaped by volcanic activity which is evident in its peaks, craters, springs and lakes. One of the country’s largest cities, Auckland, is in fact built on volcanic fields. It is dotted with around 50 volcanic cones and though all of them today lie dormant, some of the neighboring paths and hill slopes are still warmed by underlying thermal activity.

One of Auckland’s famous landmarks, the Rangitoto Island, owes its origin to volcanic activity. Though lying dormant now, Rangitoto’s landscape is witness to its fiery birth and in fact the best view of the Auckland city is to be had from Rangitoto’s summit which is a volcanic peak.

Visitors must not miss this amazing landscape if passing through New Zealand. They can also check out www.ooaha.com for best Auckland hotel deals.

A New Customizable Home Page for Yahoo

July 21, 2009 · Filed Under Business · Comment

Yahoo will be launching its new home page on Tuesday, said a company announcement touting it as the first major change in its main website since the start of the company.

The most important aspect of the new Yahoo home page is that it will be customizable. This means that users will be able to view news, social networking sites as well as other services they use most often right on the home page. This can be done by going to a pane called My Favorites on the left side of the new home page and then customizing the links from there to the most-frequently used services, either on Yahoo or elsewhere.

The change is crucial to Yahoo’s future since in recent times it has been losing ground as the most important entry point to the Web. Users now are increasingly directly accessing a range of individual services like Google, Twitter and Facebook instead of going through Yahoo home page. The links to the most popular sites on Yahoo’s home page will allow Yahoo to maintain its importance as the gateway to the Web and charge advertisers accordingly.

The new Yahoo home page will initially be available only o users in the US in the beta test form and then later to those in parts of Europe and India.
