August 31, 2009 · Filed Under Business · Comment

In a new business move, Wal-Mart Stores Inc will now allow outside retailers to sell around one million items from its online store, Walmart.com. The step is being seen as an attempt by the retail giant to tap into the vast reserve of online consumers across the world.

Some of the retailers that Wal-Mart has roped in to sell goods through its online store are CSN Stores, eBags and Pro Team. According to Wal-Mart the main reasons for selecting these retail companies are because they have large product assortments and proven track record of customer service.

Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world and its online store sell products across a vast range of categories like home, toys, baby, apparel as well as sports goods and related memorabilia. Market experts believe that the move will allow Wal-Mart explore newer areas of growth since its real stores have pretty much saturated the American market. Moreover its web portal will enable Wal-Mart to reach online consumers in places from Europe and South Korea where it does not have a real presence.

The decision to include other retailers in its online store will allow Wal-Mart to catch up with major e-commerce portals like Amazon.com and Apple.

Wikipedia to Bring Changes in Editing Policy

August 27, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Wikipedia, the most popular encyclopedia on the Web that “anyone can edit” is set to undertake some major changes in operation, the most important of which is to do with its editing policy.

When it started out, Wikipedia could be edited by any user. However soon growing charges of inaccuracy led the site to reject editing by anonymous users and it introduced the requirement of authentication to support any kind of editing.

Now Wikipedia says that while contributors can still write what they want, there will be new rules governing editing of articles on the site. If anyone wishes to edit certain articles on Wikipedia, then the changes will have to be verified by experienced volunteers before the edited version is published on the site.

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales clarified that an “experienced volunteer” might be anyone who has been associated with the site for a short period of time and has not been blocked. Once the changes are approved by the “experienced volunteer”, the edited version will be published on the site but the process may take days, weeks or even months. But until the verification takes place, changes to certain articles on Wikipedia will continue to be invisible.

Jessica Biel Tops List of Most Dangerous Celebrity Web Search

August 26, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

An internet search for actress Jessica Biel is the most likely to expose a web surfer to sites hosting spyware, a virus or malware, according to internet security company McAfee.

Sultry American actress Biel now tops the most dangerous celebrity to search in the cyberspace overtaking Hollywood star Brad Pitt from last year in a survey conducted by McAfee. This is because cybercriminals take advantage of surfers’ obsession with celebrities and then latch onto relevant sites to facilitate the downloading of spyware and other types of malicious software, explained Jeff Green who is the senior vice president of McAfee Avert Labs.

the study conducted by McAfee found that one is five web searches for “Jessica Biel photos”, “Jessica Biel”, “Jessica Biel videos” and “Jessica Biel screensavers” are likely to land at a website that has tested positive for online threats like viruses, spyware, spam and other kinds of malware.

The McAfee study listed pop star Beyonce in second place as the most dangerous celebrity to search on the web after Biel. other celebrities in descending order of cyberthreat are actress Jennifer Aniston in the third place, American football star Tom Brady in the fourth and singer Jessica Simpson in the fifth. Last year the list was topped by Brad Pitt who is now at tenth place of the most dangerous celebrities to search on the net.

New Web Browser RockMelt To Take on Rivals

August 25, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen is backing the new Web Browser RockMelt which may emerge as one of the most significant start-up in his $30 million venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

However RockMelt has a long battle ahead if it intends to gain a share of the Web browser market. According to data tracker Net Application, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer leads the market share for web browsers with 68% while Mozilla’s Firefox is steadily gaining with 22%. Among other web browsers trying hard to make their presence felt are Safari and Chrome, each being strongly backed by its company Apple and Google respectively.

What RockMelt is counting on the guidance of Andreessen who has been a pioneer in Web browsing and is currently associated with social networking site Facebook. According to a report in the New York Times on Friday, RockMelt is seeking to score over its competitors by somehow incorporating Facebook user names in its browser. This will let users interact with their friends on Facebook even as they are surfing the internet. However the newspaper report clarified that Facebook is not officially connected to the project. Industry experts point out certain similarities between RockMelt and Flock, “a social Web Browser” that had been launched in 2007 but which failed to gain any significant market presence.

Microsoft to Market IE 8 More Aggressively

August 25, 2009 · Filed Under Business · Comment

With the launch of Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft hopes to sharpen its edge in the highly competitive Web Browser market and is thus urging holdouts to upgrade from earlier versions of the software.

Since its release five months ago, IE 8 has steadily made its impact in the web browser market, prompting users to leave behind the aging IE 6. This is good news for Microsoft which also expects its latest operating system Windows 7 – to be released in October this year – to erase the bad memories of Windows Vista.

However IE 6 still manages to hold onto a significant 27.2% of the web browser market according to figures released in July by Net Applications. The main reason behind this is the lack of awareness about the latest IE 8 version as well as the feeling that the present browser is ‘good enough’ for regular purposes.

Moreover the recession has also made users wary of trying out newer products and tempted them to retain that with which they have been satisfied in the past. Schools, hospitals and other organizations facing a funding crunch could especially be daunted by the cost of upgrading computer systems to new software.

China Eases Stand on Internet Monitoring Software

August 16, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

install an internet monitoring software after a wave of protests erupted in home and abroad.

Li Yizhong, the industry and information technology minister of China announced recently that installing the ‘Green Dam Youth Escort’ software will be voluntary and it will be upto computer users of the country to decide whether or not to install the software. The minister’s stand is being viewed as a softening of China’s hard-line stand on the issue of internet monitoring and information censorship.

Three months ago China had announced that all computers sold in the country following July1 would be required to pre-install the Green Dam software. This is a web filtering package and was seen by many human rights organizations in the country and abroad as part of China’s attempts to tighten state control on information available on the internet.

However official reason that China gave as a justification of mandatory installation of Green Dam software was to control pornography on the web and protect children from accessing undesirable content. Eventually the move was suspended in June following overwhelming pressure from Chinese internet users and human rights watch groups abroad.

Google Unveils New Search Engine, Caffeine

August 14, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Google Inc has launched the preview version of a new search engine technology, Caffeine that seeks to raise the bar on various dimensions like size, indexing speed, accuracy and comprehensiveness.

Caffeine is the redeployment of the computing network that Google employs to link searchers and results. This new search engine can change way a site ranks on a Google page and hence companies will have to change their SEO methods to protect their Google rankings.

However Google will not be making any changes to the user interface as part of the Caffeine update. This means that the average user will not be able to spot any major difference in the way results appear on the page. Even the ranking of the ads will not be affected by the updates brought about in the search engine technology.

Principal Engineer of Google Inc, Matt Cutts said in a company blog that while Google is always experimenting with its search algorithms and infrastructure, “a change in this magnitude has not been done since 2006”.

Google will also be coming up with a web developer preview in order to gather feedback on the search performance of Caffeine as compared to its current search engine.
