An Entrepreneur on the Web

Enterprise noun bold undertaking; readiness to engage in enterprises
~sing a. full of enterprise

So says my Little Oxford Dictionary of Current English.

I have this Little Oxford Dictionary since the last twenty years. Given to me by my English teacher on the day I joined my school, Sherwood College, this little bound piece of papers has many a time given me profound meanings of words I ponder about. And yes I do mean intellectual depth too and not just the literal meanings. Just like this little dictionary, some things never have a timeline. Enterprise is similar. The wheel, the pen, the car, the aeroplane, the computer and the web have been results of enterprise. Imagine what this world would have been without enterprise!

Enterprise on the Web

A huge canvas which knows not global boundaries painted with the creative zeal of millions of citizens of this world. That’s how I would describe the web. Everyday I come across websites and ebusinesses unleashed with the creative talents of people I have never met or seen. It’s intriguing to see how deep imagination can run. Enterprise is about passion and just the reason why I chose to be an entrepreneur on the web.

Now that brings forth another interesting aspect. An entrepreneur. Who is he?

Entrepreneur on the web

"My son is now an "entrepreneur." That's what you're called when you don't have a job." - Ted Turner, American entrepreneur

"Entrepreneurs are about loving their journey, not their destination." - Tom O'Malia from his introduction to the book, Been There, Done That

Two faces and both absolutely true. The Great Gold Rush in late 90’s and we witnessed the metamorphosis of the stiff-upper-lipped investment banker, the factory owner, the industrialist, even the self styled investment guru turn into blabbering techno savvy doctom entreprenurs.

A few dinosaurs drowned and they called it the BUST! Most of them are back on their previous vocations and have thankfully left the web to the entrepreneurs. Incidentally revenues and profits have gone up by almost three folds from time the time the so-called "bust" took place. The traffic on the web has multiplied exponentially. (check my article Entrepreneurial Seduction on www.punit.cyberzest.com for figures)

Passion is the name of the game

"Passion costs me too much to bestow it on every trifle." - Thomas Adams

Enterprise is an expensive passion. For some it is simply a passion, depending on the way you look at it. Quantification of passion is difficult to define. For some creation is a passion for others money is passion. Yet the common denominator is passion. An enterprise is about passion. An enterprise without passion is like sex without lust.

"Lust's passion will be served; it demands, it militates, it tyrannizes."

Marquis De Sade quotes (French nobleman and novelist whose perverse sexual preferences and erotic writings gave rise to the term sadism. 1740-1814)

What’s money got to do with it

"A business that makes nothing but money is a poor kind of business," said Henry Ford

Yet Henry Ford was a rich man. That’s the beauty of being an entrepreneur. He chases his passion, lusts for his dream and works hard to make it a reality. A whore promises action, a lover pure ecstasy. In the former money tries to buy pleasure, the latter is pure passion. An entrepreneur falls in the latter category.

Consider the following -

Dhirubhai Ambani, a former petrol pump attendant, chased a dream. If it was money he chased probably Reliance would be the name of a gas station or maybe a small lubricant trading shop! After all that’s probably the best a petrol pump attendant can think of with his resources. Yet he chased a dream to build one of the greatest corporate empires.

New Business Models

"While corporate giants have been thrashing around noisily in cyberspace, showing how not to make money on the Net, scores of entrepreneurs have been quietly tinkering, creating new business models for retailing, marketing, publishing and advertising that work for them and could perhaps point the way to an Internet payoff." I had read this some while back in a back issue of BusinessWeek.com

Creating new business models

Google.com, an absolutely incredible example of new business models. Just for those who don’t know Google has much more to it than just the search engine. Gmail.com is by far the best email service I have ever used. It’s like having your desktop email client like Outlook on the web.

Google Adsense has enabled millions of entrepreneurs make money on the net. I personally know of 15 year olds making around $1000 per month sitting in remote parts in India.

To be continued next week... Online business models and creating excellence.
