The new iPhone, called the 3G S, went on sale in the US on Friday. The other countries which saw the simultaneous haunch of the comparatively less hyped new model included Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

For the new customers signing a two-year contract with AT&T for the newly launched 3G S, it would cost them $199 or $299 depending on the memory capacity. Compared to the 3G, it has a faster processor and an upgraded camera.

However, on the day of the lunch, the Apple’s servers failed to cope with the over load of new customers trying to activate their phones. On the other hand, people already possessing the iPhone tried to install a software update adding to the pressure.

What helped the company in easing the activation process was the company’s plan to earlier take online pre-orders for the new phone. Also Apple had already released the software update for its existing customers two days prior to the launch of the new product.

Apple granted the patent for iPhone touch-screen controls

January 27, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

US electronics giant Apple Inc. now has its grant for the patent for its iPhone touch-screen controls sanctioned by the government.

Driven by the phenomenal success of the Apple’s product many companies including RIM, Nokia and Synaptics were in the line of launching a similar product of their own. However, winning the patent for its iPhone, Apple has legally succeeded in its attempt to halt its iPhone competitors from using the similar technology and there by restricting their efforts to come up with refined iPhones.

US Patent 7,479,949, which was issued on the 20th of Jaunuary, has been awarded to “(Steve) Jobs et al” for a method of “detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display” to command computing devices. The good news was followed by the company’s official announcement of their all-time high quarterly profits, a day later.

“We think competition is good. We are ready to suit up and go against anyone. However, we will not stand for having our IP ripped off and will use whatever weapons at our disposal”, said the elated chief operating officer Tim Cook, hailing the iPhone as ‘Apple’s intelectual property’.

Apple Stays Confident Despite Recession Fears

October 21, 2008 · Filed Under Business · Comment

The current global financial crisis has seen some if the biggest names on Wall Street collapse like a house of cards. But the worst financial situation since the Great Depression of the 1930s has apparently had no impact on the fortunes of Apple Inc which continues to launch premium products at premium prices in a market battered by the meltdown.

Ably led by Steve Jobs, Apple last week introduced a revamped line of notebook computers as well as a new wide-screen display monitor. The only concession that Mr Jobs seem to have made to the present frugal times was to have brought down the price for the entry-level MacBook from $1099 to $999. however the rest of Apple’s notebooks continue to enjoy the premium pricing of $1299 to $2499.

Industry-watchers and investors are now keenly awaiting Apple’s earnings report for the quarter ending September 30 which will reveal how far Apple has managed to take over the PC market share from Windows. some analysts like Yair Reiner from Oppenheimer & Company expect Apple’s sales of desktop models to rise by 13% to 4.3 million in 2009 fiscal year and notebook sales to grow by 12 % to 6.76 million while others believe that if the recession in the American economy is severe enough, no one can be fully inured from its effects.

Along with this is a new set of supported multi-finger gestures which can be configured by the new trackpad preference pane or the new Trackpad Control panel.

The new MacBook weighs 4.5 pounds and is half a pound lighter than its previous version while the new MacBook Pro is slightly heavier than its predecessor. Both the new MacBooks are compatible with iPhone headphones. The new MacBook Pro comes with two separate graphic subsystems, one which uses more energy and is more powerful, the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT and the other NVIDIA GeForce 9400 M which is less powerful but uses less energy and is the one included in the new MacBook.
