Automatic Crash Notification Is On The Phone!
From seat belts to airbags to Onstar, car safety keeps advancing and it appears that My911’s new phone app is the next step in making your car travel as safe as possible. Technology starts responding to crashes before you or I can- your air bags are fast enough to meet you halfway to the dashboard, for example. The competition to provide the greatest automobile safety has been fierce, and as usual, we the consumers are the winners. Recently, concepts like Onstar have pushed things further, beginning the emergency response process before you could get your phone out of your pocket. The next step has been to get this automatic collision notification on your smartphone, and My911 has done it.
The technology to automatically detect a car crash has existed for years. It has been applied with the invention of airbags- an accelerometer detects crash-level G-forces and deploys the airbags faster than you can be launched forward, meeting you halfway to the dashboard with a cushion of air. Smartphones now come equipped with the technology that allows your car to know when to deploy the airbags. It is an accelerometer, and your phone currently uses it to track your GPS location, autofocus the camera, and other functions. New patented technology makes use of this to sense a car crash and begin taking the steps to safety automatically. \
Since your smartphone comes equipped with GPS, it can handle the entire 911 call on its own. Your phone can explain where you are more accurately and quickly than you can, even if you’re in your own driveway and fully conscious. By combining the technologies of GPS and accelerometers in one handheld device (your smartphone), calling 911 when you are in an accident can be done for you. Your phone is capable of both sensing when you crash and alerting an operator with your location. This way, even if you are knocked unconscious, the emergency response personnel will be sent immediately to your location.
But what if your phone’s mistaken? When a crash is detected, you have the opportunity to cancel the call manually. In addition, your call alerts an operator who attempts to contact you before calling 911 to report your crash. The procedure is simple and brings peace of mind to a new level in a world where car crashes kill and injure so many on a daily basis. It is easy to see how this patent can change the way that emergency response works, making life saving more immediate, secure, and efficient when it matters most. As the versatility of phones increases, peace of mind is certainly one of the positive consequences.

Catching Up To The Future With Phone Apps
If you want to see how startling fast technology is progressing these days, here’s a simple exercise for you: list all the things that your phone still can’t do. Of course, you’ll be able to list plenty of things. But each year, it seems like a few more things get crossed off. Following are a few features that have either been recently crossed off or most likely will be in the future. Hopefully it will get you as excited as I am for whatever the next big thing will be.
Who knew, for example, that an accelerometer could do so much? I didn’t know before that an accelerometer helps your navigation device track your movement, or that the same technology has given birth to a billion amusing little apps that take advantage of your phone knowing how it’s moving around. These two types of application alone have radically changed what a phone is, and who would claim that the innovations will stop coming? For example, since your phone knows when it moves around and how fast, it knows if you get in a car crash. Your phone can call 911 for you in the case that you can’t for yourself. What other innovative apps will be coming up in the next few years?
Then there’s GPS. Your phone knows where you are, and where everything else is in relation to you, meaning that you never need to be lost again. It was not that big of a leap, therefore, to tach your phone to alert when in a severe weather area, or high crime area. Again, this technology already exists in an app. I’m willing to bet that we haven’t imagined all the applications of GPS on a phone, in conjunction with all the other technologies available.
How about internet on your phone? Do we appreciate what a leap in technology that is? If we could travel back in time (don’t get your hopes up, the future would’ve told us by now if it was ever going to happen), the past generation would be mind-blown by the concept of being connected to everything you could want to know by a device that you carry in your pocket. That is, after getting their minds blown by the idea of the internet and the idea of cell phones. I don’t doubt that we’re in for more improvements on the ways that we can connect with the rest of the world, wherever we are.
Stop and think for a moment about how far phones have come in the last 15 years. Now think how much more your phone will be able to do in 15 years, at this rate. Just as the you of 15 ears ago would be surprised at how much a phone is capable of, I feel confident that the me of today would be stunned at the phones of 2025. That it is realistic to think that technology will surprise you says a lot about the age that we live in–the world changes faster than ever, and cell phones continue to be perhaps the greatest evidence of this.

Your Collision Response: 3 Ways To Be Prepared For Car Accident Safety
Car accidents happen to all of us when we least expect them: that’s why we call them accidents. We never want to think that an automobile accident is going to happen, but it’s a great comfort to know that we’re prepared for the worst. The last thing any of us wants is to end up in an emergency situation without knowing what to do or having the emergency supplies we need, so here are 3 easy tips so that you can feel prepared and confident if the worst case scenario happens:
Keep Your Cell Phone On Hand!
It’s unrealistic to think that you will have everything that you could need with you in case of an emergency- you do not want to be in this situation without being able to get the help that you or someone else may need promptly. The sooner you are able to get professional medical personnel on the scene, the better. If you do not have automatic crash response in your car or on your phone, it’s time to consider it. You can get a phone app that senses your crash by measuring your G-forces and, unless manually cancelled, will handle alerting the emergency response personnel for you. Having a camera phone is also a plus as you can document the crash on the spot. This will be helpful in resolving insurance claims.
Have the Basic Emergency Supplies in Your Car
You don’t need to sacrifice all your trunk space in order to have peace of mind- just reserve a corner of your trunk for some cones and/or road flares, a flashlight, and a first aid kit. Many cars come with these supplies already, but if yours doesn’t have them then this is a simple investment that you’ll want to make. If you’re involved in a nighttime car wreck on the freeway, the danger is far from over after the crash has happened. You will want to be as visible as possible in order to prevent an automobile accident that has already happened from hurting yourself and others after the initial impact.
Know How to Respond When You Crash
Severe or not, a car crash is a stressful experience. Take much of the stress off ahead of time by knowing how to react under certain circumstances. If, for example, the car is still functioning, your first priority is to get the vehicle off the road and as visible as possible. Once out of further danger, you can check for injuries and call for an ambulance or tow truck if needed. Safety is always the first priority in these emergencies. If you cannot move the vehicle and, because of injury or damage to the car, your movement is severely limited, sit tight and stay buckled up. You do not want to be halfway out the car door if your car is still in danger of being struck again.
Car crashes are inevitable, but they don’t need to be scary because of a lack of confidence or preparation. If we are ready for the worst, than it won’t be nearly so bad as it could be. More likely than not, you will be in a car crash sometime during your life, and when you are, you’ll know what you need to know to have confidence in an uncommon and stressful situation. The peace of mind that comes from a little preparation is astonishing- it’s more than worth the little effort that it takes.

Google, Apple in high-tech battle
The relationship between Google Inc. and Apple Inc. is now transforming into a power struggle as both the ambitions and ideas of the technology trendsetters increasingly collide with each other!
As both giants, Google and Apple are in a race to tap the mobile market, realizing it as key to success and sales, the high-powered phones for web-surfing has become the centre point of their brewing battle.
And not only this, the rivalry is fast spilling into other products, including web browsers, computer operating systems and digital music amongst others.
With Google announcing its plans on Tuesday to sell its own cell phone, the rivalry has been refueled.
Google, with its newly launched phone called Nexus One, is aiming to woo the audience providing them an advanced phone than the iPhone and Blackberry.
Free local TV soon on cell phones
With the technology advancing by every split second, very soon, the prospect of watching live, local TV shows on mobile phones and other portable devices shall also be fulfilled.
At the International Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, the manufacturers this week are showing off gadgets that can receive a new type of digital TV transmissions.
Dubbed as “Mobile DT” gadgets, these will be available this spring for consumers in the Washington, D.C. area for trial. The device includes a cell phone made by Samsung Electronics Co. and a Dell Inc. laptop.
In addition, there is Tivit, a device about the size of a deck of cards that receives a TV signal and further rebroadcasts it over Wi-Fi enabling it to be received by an iPhone or BlackBerry.
BlackBerry posts $643 million profit
BlackBerry’s makers Research In Motion (RIM) have reported a net profit of $643 million for the first quarter of the current financial year. However, the company’s quarterly revenue figures slipped from $3.46 billion to $3.42 billion from the previous quarter.
The profit figures are up from $518.3 million as reported during the previous quarter and the revenue of the company has grown by almost 53% from $2.24 billion as compared to the figures last year.
During this time, BlackBerry has reportedly added about 3.8 million net new subscribers’ accounts, taking the total to a staggering 28.5 million users.
According to figures released, the company has sold over 7.8 million smart phones during the past quarter. These sales have accounted for 81% of RIM’s revenue.
The Waterloo based wireless communications giant also forecast the second quarter revenue to be in the range of $3.45 to $3.70 billion, adding new 4.1 million subscribers in the next quarter.
According to RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie, “The industry leading BlackBerry product portfolio is driving strong customer demand around the world and our penetration of new market segments continues to expand.”
BlackBerry gets own applications store
Following the footsteps of Apple Inc, the BlackBerry manufacturer, Research in Motion Ltd (RIM), is all set to launch its one-stop shop for add-on applications on Wednesday.
BlackBerry App World will be available for download from RIM’s Web site starting at midday, Co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie of the Waterloo, Ontario-based company announced on Wednesday.
On the other hand, many other key players in the smart phone industry are developing their application stores on similar lines. The company has made available a thousand applications at the launch of its applications store.
BlackBerry App World, unlike its Apple counter part has planned to share revenues with cell phone carriers and allow them to profile themselves by setting up their own stores-within-the-store.
If their carrier chooses to enable that function, the users would be given the facility to charge application purchases to their cell phone bill.
Incidentally, Microsoft Corp announced a day earlier that their carrier stores and billing will be part of its Windows Marketplace for Mobile, an applications store that the software giant is aiming to launch along with their new phones towards the end of the year 2009.
Nokia Corp, which has several application stores, is now planning to combine them all into one. Google Inc runs an Android Marketplace of programs for the T-Mobile G1 phone, which will be joined by other phones running Google’s Android software this year.
