Search engine giant Google added a new feature, Moon in Google Earth, to its Google Earth software as a way of marking the fortieth anniversary of Apollo 11 moon landing.

Moon in Google Earth will allow users to access lunar images as well as related lunar content like information about Apollo landing sites, images shot by Apollo astronauts and even narrated tours. Anousheh Ansari, the first female private astronaut, said in a post on the Google blog that the software will help millions of users across the world to learn more about space and discover its wonders. The images and content of Moon in Google Earth are offered in Google’s Street View format.

Google already has a software for exploring the moon – the Google Moon which was released exactly four years ago and which uses Google’s web-based Google Maps service. Google Earth on the other hand is a desktop application. Other features of Google Earth include Sky and Mars as well as an Ocean Layer which was added in February this year with the launch of Google Earth 5.0.

Forty years ago on July 20, 1969, the first spacecraft from Earth, the US-made Apollo 11 landed on the moon marking an achievement which was famously described as “a small step for man, a giant step for mankind”.

Google to keep a check!

February 5, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Do you want to keep a check on your kids? Or your spouse? Refer Google Maps!

The new software released on Wednesday would enable the users with mobile phones and other wireless devices to share, without human intervention, their whereabouts with family and friends or to keep a check on their Gen Y kids.

In 2007, Google Inc. enabled the mobile phone users to check their own location on a Google map. The added feature, called ‘Latitude’ is an expansion of the same and allows tracking people in Us and 26 other countries.

According to Google product manager, Steve Lee, “This adds a social flavor to Google maps and makes it more fun.”

However some foresee privacy apprehensions. Though Google has assured that it is doing its best to avoid criticisms by asking each user to turn on the tracking software manually hence making it easy to turn off or limit access to the new service.

Google also promises that it will not retain any information about its users’ movements instead only the previous location picked up by the tracking service will be stored on Google’s computers, Mr. Lee said. The software plots a user’s location — marked by a personal picture on Google’s map — by relying on cell phone towers, global positioning systems or a Wi-Fi connection to locate them.

A global product conceived and developed by the Google at its India development center Google Map Maker allows users to add or edit features, such as roads, businesses, parks, schools, apartment buildings, localities and more. With Google Map Maker tools, users can add detailed information about these locations and this user- created geographical content is updated and made visible immediately to all other users.

“Google Map Maker solves an inherent need especially for countries such as ours where maps data is sparse. This product embodies our passion to empower people everywhere, to share knowledge of the places they know best by creating maps,” says Dr. Lalitesh Katragadda, Software Engineer and Creator of Google Map Maker.
