Apple Inc. on Wednesday announced their small 4 gigabyte iPod, the newer version of the Shuffle that Apple claims is the smallest digital music player till date.

The new third-generation Shuffle is a slim aluminum rectangle less than 2 inches long. It takes only half the space as the second generation version however with the added feature of double music storage space i.e. up to 4 gigabytes. Apple achieved this jaw-dropping form by removing most of the buttons from the body of the USD 79 device. Those were instead built into the headphone cord.

The new device also has an added feature called VoiceOver, which can, at the push of a button speaks the song and artist name or rattles off play lists that the owner has loaded onto his device.

Amazon unveils Kindle Application for iPhone

March 4, 2009 · Filed Under Business, News · Comment

Amazon on Wednesday unveiled its plan to develop an application that would allow the iPod and iPhone users to access the same content as on the USD 359 Kindle, electronic book reader from Amazon.com.

This is the first time that Kindle’s content would be available on a cell phone. The leading online retailer, Amazon.com plans to roll out this new application which could be downloaded from Apple’s online application store. It would enable the Apple device users to read the same electronic books, magazines and newspapers that Kindle owners can buy on the website, Amazon.com. Similarly to the Kindle book reader, the application will allow the users to change the text size on the screen, and add bookmarks, notes and highlight.

However, the Apple application does not connect to the Kindle store and hence the users must have an access to the Web browser on their iPhone, iPod or computer to buy the content.

Amazon’s vice president for the Kindle, Ian Freed said that Amazon has been working on the application for several months. Freed said that the company sees the software as a way to introduce non-Kindle owners to the device, potentially turning them into Kindle buyers.

“It also gives Kindle owners an additional way to read their content while on the go,” he added further.

However the application for mobile users will not include the recently included text-to-speech feature Amazon built into the latest Kindle, Kindle 2.

Apple crosses $10bn amidst recession

January 22, 2009 · Filed Under Business · Comment

Amid the feared recession, IT giant Apple has contradicted all predictions by crossing the phenomenal USD 10 billion mark in terms of the revenue generated in the quarter ending in December. With Apple’s iPod, iPhone and Macintosh Computers’ sales hitting an all time high, the company’s gross income rose to $1.61 billion in the first quarter of the financial year 2009, as compared to the previous year’s $1.58 billion, a rise of 1.89%. However the three products that contributed to the unparalleled success individually saw a growth of 3%, 88% and 9% respectively in their sales.

While the world speculated on the slowdown in the US economy and its subsequent effects on the global market, many of the analysts on the subject, foreseeing a reduced demand, announced a tough time ahead for the Information Technology (IT) sector. However Apple’s sales earned the company a record quarterly profit.

“Even in these economically challenging times, we are incredibly pleased to report our best quarterly revenue and earnings in Apple history - surpassing 10 billion US dollars in quarterly revenue for the first time ever,” said the proud Apple chief executive Steve Jobs.

Creator of iPod Quits Apple

November 6, 2008 · Filed Under News · Comment

A major shuffle in the management at Apple Inc saw Tony Fadell, the creator of the wildly popular iPod, leaving the company with his wife to devote more time to their young family.

Fadell has been credited with being the first to envision the iPod and at the time of leaving he was serving as the Senior Vice President of the company’s iPod division. Fadell quit the full-time position after seven years with Apple Inc but he will continue to stay on as the personal advisor to company CEO Steve Jobs.

Fadell’s exit comes at a time when the iPod stands at a critical juncture facing competition from new entrants in the market for portable digital media players. Still, next generation devices from Apple like the iPod Nano and iPod Touch consistently outsell their nearest competitors by huge margins all over the world.

Fadell will be replaced by Mark Papermaster who will head the iPod and iPhone divisions and report directly to Steve Jobs. Papermaster arrives at Apple after a long 25-year stint at IBM where he was closely associated with the development of several crucial projects. This has led to IBM accusing Papermaster of compromising company secrets to a competitor and even suing him for breach of non-compete agreement.
