China says no limits on use of Google’s Android

January 27, 2010 · Filed Under News · Comment

Google’s Android operating system has got a clean chit from China’s government!
According to the government’s remark on Wednesday, Google’s android phone will face no limits on its use by China’s phone companies as long as it complies with Chinese regulations.

The Chinese government has assured that the dispute over the web censorship would not affect their relationship. Google Inc. had postponed the launch of its own smart phone in China following its Jan. 12 announcement that it will no longer censor search results.

While many other companies in China are also developing Android-based phones, penalizing Google could hurt their market too.

At a news briefing, Zhu Hongren, a spokeman for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said, “As long as it fulfills Chinese laws and regulations and has good communication with telecom operators, I think its application should not have restrictions.”

New iPhone launched

June 21, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

The new iPhone, called the 3G S, went on sale in the US on Friday. The other countries which saw the simultaneous haunch of the comparatively less hyped new model included Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

For the new customers signing a two-year contract with AT&T for the newly launched 3G S, it would cost them $199 or $299 depending on the memory capacity. Compared to the 3G, it has a faster processor and an upgraded camera.

However, on the day of the lunch, the Apple’s servers failed to cope with the over load of new customers trying to activate their phones. On the other hand, people already possessing the iPhone tried to install a software update adding to the pressure.

What helped the company in easing the activation process was the company’s plan to earlier take online pre-orders for the new phone. Also Apple had already released the software update for its existing customers two days prior to the launch of the new product.

BlackBerry gets own applications store

Following the footsteps of Apple Inc, the BlackBerry manufacturer, Research in Motion Ltd (RIM), is all set to launch its one-stop shop for add-on applications on Wednesday.

BlackBerry App World will be available for download from RIM’s Web site starting at midday, Co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie of the Waterloo, Ontario-based company announced on Wednesday.

On the other hand, many other key players in the smart phone industry are developing their application stores on similar lines. The company has made available a thousand applications at the launch of its applications store.

BlackBerry App World, unlike its Apple counter part has planned to share revenues with cell phone carriers and allow them to profile themselves by setting up their own stores-within-the-store.

If their carrier chooses to enable that function, the users would be given the facility to charge application purchases to their cell phone bill.

Incidentally, Microsoft Corp announced a day earlier that their carrier stores and billing will be part of its Windows Marketplace for Mobile, an applications store that the software giant is aiming to launch along with their new phones towards the end of the year 2009.

Nokia Corp, which has several application stores, is now planning to combine them all into one. Google Inc runs an Android Marketplace of programs for the T-Mobile G1 phone, which will be joined by other phones running Google’s Android software this year.

Here’s another addition to the ever expanding list of smart phones. And this one’s very different from what you can expect out of a 3G mobile phone. Gone are the days when the mobiles were being used to shop, connect to the world on the go, exchange e-mails and watch digital TV. This one’s a 3D display!

Hitachi Ltd.’s Wooo H001 cell phone, in the market since February this year allows the users to convert the screen image to three dimensional.

The mobile phone is currently available in Japan for USD 510 or 50,000 yen.

The technology used in the smart phone is very similar to the concept behind 3D movies and TVs. The mobile phone sends a slightly different image to each eye thereby creating the illusion of being a 3D phone.

Wooo cell phone boasts of an in-built invisible barrier to ensure the 3D theater effect.

This 3D feature works for every image however reading images and networking can get tedious in 3D.
According to the mobile carrier, KDDI Corp., the Japanese company holds no plans to sell the 3D cell phone in the United States markets or otherwise.
