Comparisons of the iPhone 4 and DROID Incredible

The release officially of the iPhone 4 is causing a big stir. Many are wondering, “Will iPhone’s new 4 phone be able to stack up with the competition from the now dominant DROID Incredible?” Apple seems to have pulled it off once again is the short answer to this question. The new iPhone 4 will be bringing quite a bit of firepower along with it due to many features that are not just better than the DROID Incredible’s features, but the Incredible cannot even keep up on some because Apple holds hardware and software with proprietary rights so no one else can beat them. Take notice that the iPhone 4 is certainly not completely better than the DROID Incredible in every facet, since it has quite a few options that the iPhone can’t match up with. The DROID Incredible has fought a very hard battle thus far, gaining a substantial portion of the market share over the last year, but once the iPhone 4 is released it is almost definitely going to crush all competitors in market share over the upcoming quarter. The main competition that the new iPhone will probably face will move more towards the HTC EVO, not the Incredible.

The main selling point for the DROID and DROID Incredible up until this point has been it’s ability to multitask, coupled with a huge advertising and marketing campaign to outline the differences between the iPhone 3GS and DROID. This worked very well and the DROID did appear to gain considerable market share during this period, but with the new iPhone OS 4 operating system allowing for multitasking, it hardly makes the DROID Incredible seem to be so incredible anymore. Especially when you consider the app differential between the two platforms. Currently Apple outnumbers Android ~215,000 apps to 70,000 apps. This is a huge margin and is one of the main selling points for most buyers. However, for those of you probably reading this article, it’s going to take a little more than just a couple numbers on the apps and operating system abilities to win you over, so we’ve compiled a detailed comparison of the main features and selling points of each platform below. We hope you enjoy!

Surface Differences

We all know the sleek designs of Apple and this new iPhone 4 won’t be any different. It comes equipped with a band of stainless steel that is also the antenna which they designed to be up to 4 times the strength of steel which allows the phone to have the super thin and powerful design. Besides the band of stainless steel, their is also aluminosilcate glass in both the front and back(this is the same material used in top speed choppers and trains). Designed to be twenty times more stiff and strong than plastic, and extremely durable, this glass itself is super hi-tech. The DROID Incredible compared…is plastic. Seriously that should say quite enough on this point as the iPhone has a much sharper design and better appeal.

Dimensions(Weight/Size)

The new iPhone 4 weighs in at 4.8 ounces (137 grams) and measures 4.5 inches (H) by 2.31 inches (W) by 0.37 inches (D). The DROID Incredible comparably weighs in 4.59 inches (130 grams) and measures 4.63 inches (H) by 2.3 inches (W) by 0.47 inches (D). As you can see the differences here aren’t that astonishing. The iPhone 4 dimensions differs slightly in weight and the depth is considerably thinner than that of the DROID incredible. This is as a result of many of the internal factors that Apple painstakingly designed in to fit perfectly in their new glass metallic casing. However, for most consumers, this really won’t be a factor when considering which device to purchase.

Cellular and Wireless

Verizon and Alltel use the Dual Band CDMA 2000 system they offer for the DROID Incredible. AT&T will continue its affiliation with the iPhone 4 as expected, operating their GSM/EDGE network. For more detailed differences please review the article on our website comparing AT&T’s network to Verizon’s.

The iPhone 4 and the DROID Incredible share very similar capabilities on the wireless front. Both smartphones use 802.11 b/g/n and also share similar equipment such as 2.1+EDR Bluetooth technology. The iPhone 4 may also have the option of wireless tethering coming along with its OS 4 operating system, which would be a huge step up. If you have wireless tethering capabilities, you can sync automatically, similar to what Macbook’s and other Apple products have now.

The current cellular carrier, AT&T probably accounts for the majority of all complaints with the current iPhone 3GS. Some may find this to be a huge factor in which phone they choose, and AT&T and Apple both know this and thus have made promises to make their network much stronger. This would help to resolve the current issues of dropping calls and spotty 3G coverage that users complain of so often. Even though they may have “promised” to do so, they seem to be dropping the ball on it as those changes have yet to be noticed by the majority of iPhone users. So keep in mind that at this point, if you go with the iPhone 4, your probably going to have some of the same encounters with network problems that everyone else is having right now.

Services Location Based

The iPhone 4 will offer assisted GPS, and their standard digital compass which seems to me to be the most useless item on the phone. These items are a step up from the iPhone 3GS which had a proprietary app that used maps and directions from Google Maps. The iPhone 4’s location based services will be setup using cellular triangulation and wi-fi signals to get a fix on your locale. The DROID Incredible on the other hand, will offer navigation via Google Maps, just like previous DROID smartphones. Not exactly a massive difference here, but the DROID Incredible may be the better offer on this subject since it gets its info directly from Google’s own navigation services. This support may be a decision making advantage not just for the Incredible, but every single Android OS smartphone as well.

Battery/Power

The iPhone 4 will come equipped with a built in rechargeable lithium ion battery. The battery can be recharged via USB connection to a computer or the standard power adapter unit. The DROID Incredible also comes equipped with a rechargeable lithium ion battery that can be charged in the same way. The big difference you’ll see here is that the DROID Incredible battery is removable and therefore exchangeable in the event one battery goes out and you have a secondary. This shouldn’t really be a huge concern unless you plan on going on a camping trip or somewhere where you are likely to not have access to a power grid. In which case, I doubt you are going to need your cell phone anyway.

They say hindsight is 20/20 and that is why the iPhone 4 had an advantage when it comes to talk time, usage, and standby times. It can produce a very healthy total talk time of around 7 hours if on 3G and 14 if on 2G. Standby can pull off in the 300 hour range too. If your a music lover you can listen for 40 hours! If you love videos, you can keep your eyes on about 10 hours worth of them. Surf the net for about 6 hours straight if your using 3G to do it, or 10+ if your on Wi-fi.

Comparing the DROID Incredible to the iPhone 4 in these categories is not really much of a match up at all due to the iPhone 4’s much larger battery. The DROID Incredible only gets about 312 minutes of total usage time and about 145 hours of standby time. This may not be that big of a deal for you though if you are like most people and charge the phone at some point during a day or at least charge it at night. However, if you use your phone a lot during a day to talk, surf, listen, and watch anything and everything you can with your phone, then you are going to better off with the iPhone 4 in this department.

Storage and Memory(Capacity)

The DROID Incredible comes with 8GB’s of memory, which can be expanded up to 24 GB’s of memory by adding a 16GB microSD card. You can’t store any of your applications(don’t worry you can store music, videos and other info on it, just not apps)on the 16GB expansion card though, so this can become a major issue for those choosing to purchase it. The iPhone 4 however, even though it didn’t live up to the rumor that it would carry a 64GB internal memory, comes equipped with a 32GB memory. This is very similar to the previous iPhone 3GS model.

With regards to memory, if you plan on downloading large numbers of apps, the iPhone 4 may be the better option, however if most of your memory usage will be for photos, video, and music the DROID Incredible may offer a substantially better option because users would be able to swap microSD cards for each of the above mediums depending on what they needed at the time. For most users, either option, the iPhone 4 or DROID Incredible will offer more than enough for everyday usage to satisfy your needs.

Display Screen

Okay this is where the MAJOR differences begin to come into play as both phones have been fairly similar up till now. Apple stepped it up a notch with their new display though offering a retina display with an enormous 960 x 640 pixel resolutions and 326 ppi. The 800 x 480 pixels that the DROID Incredible had that was so impressive, just got trumped. The DROID Incredible’s display is a little bit larger when compared to the iPhone 4’s(3.7″ to 3.5″), that larger screen area makes the fact of having less pixels even more apparent. When we get to the camera comparison for these phones below, the pixel difference will again become a huge advantage for the iPhone 4.

The contrast settings on the iPhone at 800:1 will be a little better than the DROID’s too and can only help to make images even better. The iPhone 4 will therefore not only have a better contrast and pixel quality image to put on their screens, but that display screen(front and back) will now be fingerprint resistant as well thanks to an oleophobic coating placed on them.

Google launches Nexus One phone

January 6, 2010 · Filed Under News · Comment

As per the speculations, internet search giant, Google Inc, revealed its very own smart phone on Wednesday. With this, the internet giant is aiming to boost its position in the emerging mobile Internet market by exerting greater control over the new generation of Web-surfing devices.

This smartphone, dubbed as Nexus One, will be sold directly to consumers.

The sleek touchscreen phone is Google’s boldest venture outside its traditional Internet business. This will also be the first time that an 11-year-old company will sell a consumer electronics device bearing its well-known brand.

However, despite a positive response to Google’s new phone, analysts say the phone is not as revolutionary in design as Apple Inc’s iPhone was at its time. Despite various favorable reviews from across the globe, experts also noted that the phone doesn’t have any major revolutionary features different from others in the market that run Google’s Android software.

The Nexus One ships immediately and exclusively from Google’s online store for $179 with a two-year contract from Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA, or $529 without a service plan.

According to the latest press reports, the internet search giant Google is aiming to strengthen its presence in the world of mobile telephony with its plans to introduce its very first high-tech phone sometime soon with the dawn of the New Year.

According to the Wall Street Journal reports and other sources close to Google, the Mountain View, California, based giant is expected to release a phone called ‘Nexus One’ that runs Google’s Android operating system.

It also added that the company is aiming to sell the phone directly to consumers, skipping mobile service providers.

Until now, Google has always been dependent on other companies, like HTC, Samsung or Motorola, to provide network support and hardware.

According to the reports, the new phones will be manufactured by Taiwanese phone maker HTC. Incidently, this company has already produced a lot of phones that use Android.

Google plans Android event in January

December 29, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Amid wide spread speculation that Google plans to release its own smartphone, the internet giant announced its plans on Tuesday to hold a press event next month about its Android mobile phone operating system.

The Mountain view, California based internet giant Google has sent invites to the press, asking them to attend an “Android press gathering” on January 5 at the company’s headquarters.

The invitation said, “With the launch of the first Android-powered device just over a year ago, we’ve seen how a powerful, open platform can spur mobile product innovation. And this is just the beginning of what’s possible.” However, it did not provide any further details about the event.

This invite, however, comes amid all the speculations that Google is prepared to release its own brand smartphone called “Nexus One”. This phone is expected to be sold directly to the customers without any tie-up with any of the telecom carriers.

The device is also being tested by the Google employees internally.

Android expected to overtake iPhone by 2012 : Study

March 10, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Acoording to the new report published by market researcher Informa Telecoms and Media, the sales of Google’s Android smartphones are expected to exceed the sales of Apple’s iPhone by the year 2012.

Web giant Google released the first beta developers’ kit for its Android Operating System platform in August last year. The first handset, the G1 smartphone was launched the following month, September. Their second handset, the Magic, is expected to arrive next month.
On the other hand, Apple’s iPhone was first launched in the U.S. in June 2007. The iPhone 3G phones hit stores last July, barely a few months before the launch of its Google rival.

However, both of the two smart phones are faring far better than the Symbian OS. In fact the two, along with BlackBerry OS, Linux and Windows Mobile are gaining huge popularity in the market over the oldest in the field.

According to Informa, last year’s smart phone sales were as high as 162 million units and for the first time the figures surpassed the annual laptop sales. The analyst forecasts smartphone penetration is expected to reach 13.5 percent of new handsets sold this year.

According to Gavin Byrne, a research analyst at Informa, “The smartphone segment is not as simple as it was a few years ago. In 2008 there were almost 162 million smartphones sold, surpassing notebook sales for the first time. The decision to move the Symbian platform to open source is crucial in maintaining its leadership over Android, Linux and Microsoft.”

He further added, “While demand in the mid tier will fall away during 2009, sales of new smartphones will grow by over 30 per cent to 211.2 million units, driven by innovative new devices and operator subsidies designed to promote mobile data consumption.”

The research also suggests that the smartphone sales will continue to be immune to the global economic downturn, maintaining “robust growth” of 35.3 percent, year-on-years; however the total handset sales will not be so resilient and are set to fall 10.1 per cent.
