Microsoft launches Windows 7

October 25, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

On Thursday, Microsoft Corp launched its most important release in more than a decade, Windows 7! This is believed to be the company one shot to strengthen its grip on the PC market by winning back customers after a disappointing show from Vista.

The Mountain View, California, based company has reportedly received good feedback and reviews for its new operating system. The world’s largest software company, accounting for more than 90 per cent of the personal computers, is aiming to grab its customers back with the new technology from arch rivals Apple Inc and Google Inc.

Windows 7, the new OS is faster, less cluttered and has new touch-screen features. This comes after almost three years of the launch of Vista, touted as a relatively complex system.

The success of Windows accounts for more than half of Microsoft’s profit. Priced at $199.99 for the Home Premium version of Windows 7, or $119.99 for users seeking to upgrade from older versions of the operating system, this version from the software giant is comparatively way cheaper than Vista.

More than Half US Companies to Skip Windows 7, Says Survey

July 13, 2009 · Filed Under Business · Comment

A survey has found that six in ten American companies are likely to avoid purchasing Microsoft Corp’s hugely hyped computer operating system Windows 7 due to concerns of cost and compatibility with existing applications.

The survey conducted by ScriptLogic Corp included the response from more than a thousand companies. Results revealed that a majority of the companies were driven by cost-cutting concerns and preferred not to buy expensive operating systems or software updates. While 60% of the companies surveyed admitted that they had no intention of buying Windows 7, 34% said that they will deploy it only at the end of next year. Only 5.4% of the companies were ready to put Windows 7 in place by the end of this year.

While the lack of time and resources emerged as the primary reason for skipping the deployment of Windows 7, around 34% of the companies surveyed said that they were concerned about the compatibility of the new OS with current applications and thus going to give the latest Microsoft offering a miss.

ScriptLogic Corp is a service provider which helps companies to manage their computer networks based on Windows. Microsoft Corp is slated to introduce its newest OS Windows7 on October 22 and the response will be keenly watched especially after the debacle of Windows Vista.

MS Office 14 Launch Likely to be Delayed

February 24, 2009 · Filed Under News · Comment

Microsoft revealed early Tuesday that the launch of its Office 14 edition might be delayed to the end of 2010 and will not take place early half of this year as earlier expected.

Almost 29% of Microsoft revenues came from its Business Division in the last quarter and a whopping 90% of that contribution resulted from the sale of Microsoft’s Office-branded products. The principal application suite from MS Office continues to be the world’s most commonly-used platform at least in case of document production and management.

In such a scenario experts are concerned about the impact of the delay of the MS Office 14 launch. Questions are already being raised whether user dependence on Office 7 is stable enough to last more than another year.

For a time it seemed as if Microsoft would be aiming for a double whammy launch by releasing its Windows 7 and Office 14 at around the same time. The impact of the twin launch would have undoubtedly given the software giant an added momentum among consumers at a time when even the technology sector is reeling under the effects of recession.

However it will be become necessary for Microsoft to go ahead with the Windows 7 launch not only because it constitutes the principal operating system but also to put the unpleasant experience of Windows Vista behind it.

Microsoft Unveils Windows 7, Looks Beyond Vista Brand

October 30, 2008 · Filed Under Business · Comment

Microsoft launched the latest version of its Windows operating system on Tuesday with claims that it will be a slimmer and more responsive version of its popular operating system.

The new version will be branded as Windows 7 because it is the seventh in the series of operating systems which have been developed by Microsoft for PCs since the 1980s. Microsoft is sure to hope that the familiar brand name will help erase the memory of the disastrous response its Windows Vista got from customers and reviewers. However the company did not specify when Windows 7 will be available for sale to the public.

Microsoft further announced that it would soon bring out a Web-based version of its Office programs. this is most likely intended to take on competitors like Google Docs and Zoho which have introduced spreadsheets, word processors and presentation programs capable of running on a Web browser.

However Microsoft officials acknowledged that the strategy might evoke concern from market analysts on the possibility of the new products eating into the profits of the lucrative Office franchise. Investors are already worried about the Financial results of Microsoft in the most recent quarter which shows that the Windows unit reported a mere rise of 2% in revenues as opposed to as 4% decline in operating income.
