If you are looking for more than just an ordinary GPS tool, the Garmin Nuvi 295W may be just what you are looking for. It has a built-in digital camera and comes equipped for Wi-Fi. Actually, it is quite similar to the Garmin Nuvifone, just without the phone capability. This device was released in May 2010. Following is a quick Garmin Nuvi 295W review.
In design, this device looks like a smartphone. It resembles the Garmin Nuvifone quite closely. They are the same size and the looks differ only because the 295W is chrome as opposed to the black Nuvifone. They have identical touchscreens as well.
As said, the device is equipped with WiFi. You can use it to surf the Web and to check your emails. Email attachments such as Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, Powerpoint presentations, PDFs and JPGs can also be viewed. The digital camera is 3 MP and comes with auto-focus capability. Photos can be taken and then sent to people or uploaded onto the Internet.
As with a variety of other products, such as the iPhone, you can use it in either portrait or landscape mode which can make it a lot easier when you are using it to navigate. Speaking of navigation, maps are included for both the United States as well as Canada. There are also cityXplorer maps with more detailed information for city areas.
There are also close to six million points of interest (POIs) included such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, stores and more. It will speak the street names as it guides you from one turn to the next one. Current traffic information is not available, nor is Bluetooth connectivity.
With email, Internet search results or your address book, you can get navigation information with just one touch. You can also get navigation to Geotagged images. You can take photos with the camera, tag them and then get directions to the location. Your car location will automatically be saved when you remove the navigator from its dock with a Locate feature. You will never have to worry about forgetting where your parking space is again.
Other features include a calendar, stopwatch, calculator, clock with world time zones, currency converter and weather forecasts. Also included is an Ṃ player and picture viewer. There is a connector for a car charger cradle, a USB port for charging and syncing and a headphone jack.
Is this navigator right for you? It may depend on whether you need to have the ability to use it in multiple vehicles. If you have GPS in the car you always use and a smartphone, it might not offer you anything new. However, it does have some great features and, if a mobile GPS unit is something you need, the Garmin Nuvi 295W could be perfect.
